COVID and Summer Slide

COVID 19 has changed the landscape of our lives and has forced us to redesign our normal lifestyles during the lockdown. It’s almost 9 weeks since schools were replaced by at home eLearning. Parents replaced the tasks done by the school to be a caregiver, educator, and provider for the learning environment beside their own jobs and other parenting duties. Studying outside their usual structured learning environments and tools, students were not necessarily able to focus and gain the skills and the concepts at their best. These are unusual times no doubt but it has long term impact on kids retaining the skills at their grade level.

World Economic Forum( WEF)  and UNESCO report that in response to the pandemic schools have closed in 160 countries, affecting more than 1.5 billion students. In its recent report, CNN marked that closure of school till the end of the school year as ‘COVID Slide.’ The experts fear that the annual summer slide could supercharge the loss of learning for students having a hard time keeping up with their education during the lockdown. They consider that students will be missing out on a couple of months of formal instruction and will be losing the academic mindset. It is believed that in Fall teachers might see only 70% of the gains in reading and 50% in math due to remote learning. Students’ habits of getting up late and no structure to learning and testing might further increase the inequities in the classrooms.

Interviews with academic experts highlight that the academic losses could be particularly problematic for grade school students who should be in the process of laying critical foundations of reading, writing and math skills that should be built on for years to come…potentially robbing a generation of students of vital stages of learning. “It’s kind of double whammy of starting to forget and losing that kind of mindset of being out of school, and missing out on a couple of important months of instruction.” A combination of COVID and annual summer slides may result in teachers having students in their classrooms who are grade apart in their learning.
